Electric vehicles to have audible warning systems

Posted: 5 August 2019

Electric vehicles will have to emit a noise at slow speeds under new EU regulations that came into effect in July.

It follows concerns that low-emission vehicles are too quiet, putting other road users at risk as they cannot be heard as they approach. The vehicles will emit noise when reversing or travelling below 12mph although drivers will have the power to deactivate the device.

The Acoustic Vehicle Alert Systems (AVAS) device, which sounds like a traditional engine, must be fitted to all new types of four-wheeled hybrid and electric vehicles from 1 July this year and all existing models by 2021.
