Buildings insurance covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home's structure such as walls, roof and windows and permanent fixtures if damaged by events like fire, flood, or storm, but not the contents inside the property.

To find out more, read our buildings insurance explained article.

Contents insurance protects your personal belongings inside your home against things such as damage or theft, contents would include items like furniture, Tv’s, and clothing, but not the structure of the property itself.

Whether you’re renting as a tenant or own your home, you’ll want to make sure you have contents insurance. You can also add additional cover for high value items, cover away from your home (for things like your mobile or laptop) and bicycle cover.

To find out more, read our contents insurance explained article.

Landlord insurance protects landlords and their properties/contents from things like property damage.

Landlord insurance is different to home insurance and provides more tailored cover for those who are renting out a property to tenants.

When it comes to choosing your policy, cheaper home insurance isn’t always better. It’s important to find cover that fits your needs. Compare home insurance cover and make sure your policy is right for you.

Let’s take a look at some of the factors that make up your premium:

  • Building materials: What your home is made of can affect your premium. Different materials can mean different risks.
  • Location: If your home is in a flood-prone area, this might affect your insurance premium as there’s a higher chance of claims.
Read our handy article on protecting your home from flooding.
  • Home security: Security features in your home could mean a lower premium.
  • Building type: Bigger homes with more rooms typically have higher rebuilding costs, which can affect your home insurance price.
Find out more about home rebuild costs.
  • Repair and labour costs: The rising cost of repairing high-tech items can impact the price of your home insurance.
  • Number of claims: An increase in claims, due to extreme weather events for example, can affect your home insurance cost.
  • Severe weather: We also consider future severe weather and how it might affect our customers.

  • Personal details

  • Property details
You’ll need to provide the details of your property, including the year the property was built, the types of locks you have and the material your walls and roof are made up of. We’ll also need to know if your property has ever experienced flooding.
  • Your belongings
Your contents need to be insured for the amount that it would cost to replace them as new. You’ll need to tell us about your contents plus valuables, bicycles and personal possessions, including any individual items worth more than £2,000. Learn more about home insurance with valuables.

Every Allianz Online Home Insurance policy covers both your buildings and contents, and your hearing aids are automatically covered in the home. However, the cover does not include loss (either in your home or garden) or accidental damage (unless you have enhanced cover) so take extra care of them and keep them safe.

Enhanced accidental damage can be added to your policy as an optional extra on our Bronze and Silver policies. This is automatically included if you have chosen a Gold policy.

We also offer an optional extra called personal belongings away from home this covers possessions like hearing aids when you take them out and about with you. You can choose to include this on our Allianz Online Home Insurance Silver and Bronze policies. This is automatically included if you have chosen a Gold policy. Your hearing aids will be covered for loss in your home or garden. If you have any items worth more than £2,000, these will need to be specified on your policy.

Underinsurance is when your home insurance policy doesn’t fully cover your buildings and contents up to their true value.

This can happen if you underestimate what your property or your belongings are worth when you get a quote.

To get the right level of cover, you need to make sure your ‘total sum insured’ is enough to cover everything. If not, you might underpay for your premium, leaving your home underinsured.

If this happens and you make a claim, you may have to cover some of the costs yourself.

It’s important your total sum insured is enough to rebuild your home and for all your belongings, or a claim may be rejected. In some circumstances, your policy could be cancelled or ‘voided’ (treated as though it never existed).

We can cover an annexe as long as your main home is also insured with us. It would need to have the same postal address as your home and be occupied by a member of your family. We just need to update the total number of bedrooms and bathrooms at the property to include the annexe.

If it has a separate postal address, is completely detached from the main home or is lived in by someone that’s not a member of your family, we won't be able to cover it.

You'll need to let us know the type of work carried out from your home so we can let you know if any additional terms apply.

Clerical work from the home would be classed as 'Office use without visitors' and you should still tell us about it. This could include secretarial tasks, for example, and duties like typing, emailing, answering phone calls and taking messages.

An example of ‘other business use’ would be if you run a beauty therapy business from your home or you have a room for tutoring.

You should also let us know if you work from an outbuilding, such as a detached garage.

Allianz Online Home Insurance covers blocked drains or pipes up to the building’s ‘sum insured’ on the policy.
