How to party-proof your home with the right insurance

Published 19 January 2026

Planning a party at home brings excitement, but it also comes with risks that many hosts don't consider until something goes wrong. From guest injuries to property damage, or even theft during larger gatherings, the costs can quickly mount up.

Here at Allianz, we see firsthand how parties can lead to unexpected claims – whether that's a guest slipping on a wet floor, valuable items going missing, or damage from enthusiastic celebrations that got a bit out of hand.

So let's take a look at:

  • How your home insurance covers party-related incidents.
  • When you might need additional event insurance.
  • Practical steps to protect your home and guests during parties.

When guests accidentally damage your belongings or furniture during celebrations, your home insurance accidental damage cover typically steps in to help. This includes incidents like wine spills on expensive carpets, broken ornaments knocked over during dancing, or garden furniture damaged by enthusiastic party-goers.

However, you'll need to pay your policy excess before any payout, and coverage limits may apply to high-value items like artwork or electronics. If valuable possessions go missing during larger gatherings, your policy may cover theft – though you'll need to report it to police and provide evidence.

Remember, intentional damage isn't covered, so if someone deliberately breaks something during a dispute, you'll face the replacement costs yourself. For expensive items or frequent hosting, consider increasing your contents cover or adding accidental damage protection.

At Allianz, we understand that hosting events at home requires the right balance of protection and peace of mind. Our home insurance policies include personal liability cover as standard, protecting you when friends and family visit your property for celebrations.

  1. Check your cover - Review your home or contents insurance policy to make sure you're covered for any party-related incidents like accidental damage. This means you'll know what you can claim for and for how much, so you don't have to spend the morning after sorting through paperwork.
  2. Assess risks - Check for any potential hazards or risks, particuarly in the kitchen and dining area, so you can prevent accidents or damage. Think wires and cables, candles, and hot pots and pans. If guests are coming over, it's also worth reviewing your liability coverage (under your home insurance) to make sure it's a good level and covers you for accidents in your home.
  3. Decorate safely - Hanging lights and decorations is an art, but they're not worth a claim for broken windows (nor are they worth any broken bones!). So, when decorating for a party, make sure your decorations don't pose any fire or injury risks and double check the materials and placements to avoid them falling on, or near lit flames. Remember to switch off lights and blow candles out after a party... no matter how tired you may be!
  4. Home security - Make sure your home security system is on and working, especially if your party involves gifts! Christmas and birthdays are a great opportunity for potential thefts and home break-ins, so make sure you're not leaving gifts (wrapped or opened!) in view of passers-by. It's also a good idea to keep receipts for expensive gifts or purchases as they can be crucial when filing a claim for lost, stolen or damaged items.
  5. Outdoor decorations - Keep outdoor decorations well secured to prevent damage from wind, rain and even theft. This should help your avoid claiming for damages due to flying fairy lights, damaging windows or catching fire! Be sure to pack them safely once your events are finished and when the festivites are over too.

So, whether you're hosting intimate dinner parties or larger garden celebrations, we're here to ensure your home insurance works as hard as you do to create memorable moments.
