Redefining music retail: Inside the new PMT store

Posted: 26 June 2019

Professional Music Technology opened their new Birmingham store on 15th June, moving from the site they've been based at for the last 18 years. The previous store had established itself as a must visit for musicians the world over due to its size and stock holding. With customers such as Noel Gallagher, Radiohead and even Rick Astley; you can start to understand the level of prestige the store had.

We visited on the opening weekend to check out the store and see if we could leave without spending some money!

  • Walking in to the large open plan showroom is awe inspiring. The large guitar showroom in the older store was always a show stopper but the impact of the layout here is something else.
  •
  • Touches of theatre added around the store are something of a PMT hallmark and it's fitting that the Black Sabbath Cross, an original set piece from the 1981 Mob Rules tour, is the highlight at the Birmingham store.
  • Friendly welcomes greet you at every turn, which is nothing new from PMT but noticeable when compared to non-music retail sites of this size.
  • PMT were one of the first retailers in the UK to have a Roland Planet back in 2001 which evolved to become the Roland Store. We love the new layout which showcases their products fantastically and Roland have a specialist member of staff in-store to help you too.
  •
  • A fresh feature of the new store is the first Yamaha Premium Centre in Europe which offers the full line up of Yamaha’s musical instruments including some rare items you wouldn’t normally get to see!

You’ll find Europe’s largest single guitar wall, a proud bragging right of the old store, has been moved and upgraded. The volume of guitars on display is breath-taking and covers all the major brands and more.

There's a huge selection of amplifiers, bass guitars and acoustics displayed to try with the Premier Taylor Room and the Martin Heritage Room showcasing two of the world’s most prestigious brands of acoustic guitars!

  • We’ve not mentioned the range of PA equipment, which is available to try out in store, or the concert sized stage which will host masterclasses, live music and signings.
  •
  • The Drum department has a huge selection of drums and cymbals, including electronic kits and percussion and you'll find the latest gear from Korg, Nord, Focusrite and more in the hi-tech department. Everything is available to try, compare and lust over!

This is a staggeringly stocked store, presented with a flair that customers of PMT have become used to. While shopping online is seen as convenient, a store like PMT can provide the best from a retail experience; talking with great staff, looking and trying out the best gear and making sure you get a good deal too.

If you do visit PMT Birmingham, keep your eyes open as you may even spot our musical insurance posters and leaflets there too!
