Theory test explained
The UK driving theory test is run by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and consists of two parts that you must pass in one sitting.
How many questions and what is the pass mark?
The multiple-choice section includes 50 questions that you'll answer in 57 minutes. You need to score at least 43 out of 50 to pass. Questions cover topics including:
- Road signs and signals.
- Rules of the road.
- Vehicle safety and maintenance.
- Motorway rules and vulnerable road users.
What is the hazard perception test?
After the multiple-choice section, you'll watch 14 video clips showing everyday driving scenarios. One clip contains two developing hazards, while the others have one each. The pass mark is 44 out of 75 points. Click the mouse as soon as you spot a hazard developing to score maximum points.
How to book your driving theory test and what it costs
The test costs £23 for car and motorcycle tests. You can book online through the government website at gov.uk/book-theory-test. You'll need your provisional driving licence details and a credit or debit card to complete the payment. Theory test centres are located across England, Scotland and Wales, so you can choose a location that's convenient for you.
How to prepare and practise for your DVSA theory test
The best way to prepare is consistent daily revision rather than cramming the night before. Here's what to focus on:
- Study the Highway Code thoroughly – it covers everything you need to know
- Use official DVSA practice apps to familiarise yourself with the question format
- Take mock tests regularly to build confidence and identify weak areas.
- Practise hazard perception clips daily – this skill improves with repetition.
- Ask your instructor for guidance on areas to focus on.
Aim for 30 minutes of focused study each day over 4-6 weeks for the strongest results.
Theory test FAQs
Your theory test pass certificate is valid for 2 years from the date you pass. You must complete and pass your practical driving test within this time. If your certificate expires before you pass your practical, you'll need to retake the theory test. Once you've passed, book your practical test to get on the road.
You can change or cancel your theory test online at gov.uk/change-theory-test, ideally giving at least 3 working days' notice to avoid losing your fee. If you need to cancel at short notice due to illness, a health condition, or bereavement, contact the DVSA with proof for a refund.
Yes, motorcycle and moped riders must pass a theory test before taking their practical test. The test format and cost (£23) are the same as for cars. Northern Ireland has a separate booking service through nidirect.gov.uk for motorcycle theory tests.
