Saracens clinched a sensational victory over third-placed Leicester Tigers at Welford Road on Saturday to cement their place in the top two of the Premiership table.
After trailing 17-6 at half-time, Sarries pulled off one of the comeback’s of the season with tries from David Strettle (2), James Short and Chris Wyles securing a monumental fourth consecutive away win over the Tigers in regular season fixtures.
Joel Tomkins, released by England during the week, was instrumental in Saracens’ second-half fight-back. He played a pivotal role in three of the visitor’s tries, illustrating his pace, power and sumptuous off-loading skills to lay on scores for Strettle and Short.
Saracens are sniffing out top spot, especially with current leaders Harlequins due to visit Allianz Park in a month’s time. The Men in Black are now only one point behind the table toppers, thanks to Wyles’ late score that confirmed Sarries left Welford Road with maximum rewards.
Saracens Director of Rugby, Mark McCall, was delighted with the character shown by his side in the second half, singling out the try scorers for particular praise. He said: “We were second best in pretty much everything in the first half, and 17-6 at half time seemed like a mountain to climb.
“We did incredibly well to turn things around – it was great to come out and score four tries. We got some real tempo in our play in the second half and I thought David Strettle and James Short took the tries exceptionally well.”
