Katie Knight – IT Graduate Scheme

The IT scheme is made up of four rotations lasting six months each within the IT department at our Guildford Head Office. By the end of the two years you’ll have completed rotations as a Project Manager and Business Analyst, and have an idea of which role you prefer for your future career.

Throughout the past year I’ve had engagement with all of the senior managers, working with them on IT initiatives and helping to organise the IT conference. My first rotation was in Corporate Technology who are responsible for supporting all shared systems and my role was largely supplier management focused, negotiating contracts with third parties and working on a couple of upgrade projects. Currently I am about to finish my second rotation which has been in Commercial IT. I joined the team in a Project Manager position and have been running four projects.

My career highlight so far has definitely been delivering my latest project which is due to go-live this weekend! I was quite daunted by the project at first as there were many business stakeholders and it was technically quite complex, I feel like I’ve learnt so much and it has really fast-tracked my development.

If I was to give advice to someone thinking of applying to the IT scheme it would be - go for it! Don’t be put off by the technical aspect of the scheme – you’ll pick this up so quickly once you’re here. Coming from a Geography background I had very little knowledge about the insurance industry before I started at Allianz. It’s really interesting to see how events on the news have a direct effect on the business and how we operate. I recently went to a talk about our response to the floods and it was fascinating to hear about this side of the business.

As a new graduate, I think it’s very important to work in an environment where you are going to be challenged, but you also have the support behind you to help you along the way. At the start of my scheme my manager and I discussed areas that I felt needed development and put together a professional development plan. I’ve also become Certified by the Chartered Insurance Institute and Allianz was hugely supportive of this, allowing me to take study time to prepare for the exams.
