Saracens vs Sale 06.01.13
Posted on: 09 September 2014
A try apiece from David Strettle and Charlie Hodgson, as well as 22-points from Owen Farrell’s boot ensured Saracens won their final Premiership match at Vicarage Road after 15 years in Watford.
Farrell marshalled his Saracens troops with a commanding performance in the number ten jersey, which served as a timely reminder to the England coaching staff ahead of the Six Nations.
Both sides found each other difficult to break down with Farrell and Danny Cipriani trading blows from the kicking-tee during a physical first-half, which Saracens led 15-6.
The kicking duel continued until the 63rd minute when former Sale legend, Charlie Hodgson, set up a try for David Strettle shortly after coming off the bench. Almost immediately afterwards the roles were reversed as Hodgson crossed the tryline himself to cement a comfortable Saracens victory.
Mark McCall praised his team’s performance and reflected on Saracens’ upcoming move to Allianz Park. He said: “After a sluggish first ten minutes we were very dominant in the next 30 minutes of the match. It was a wearing-down process and a bit of a grind at times.
“We’ve done very well here over the last two years, but we’ve got somewhere very exciting to look forward to – obviously we’ve had our first training session at Allianz Park this week, and the players are all very excited about having our own home for the first time.”
