Saracens vs Bath 22.12.12

Posted on: 24 December 2012

Charlie Hodgson was once again the star of the show for Saracens, slotting 17 points and setting up the only try of the game for scrum-half Richard Wigglesworth, while Bath struggled in the difficult conditions on their home turf.

Torrential rain in the West Country hindered both sides from establishing themselves early on, but Hodgson broke the deadlock in the 14th minute with a penalty, and shortly afterwards set up Wigglesworth with a clever kick to extend Saracens’ lead.

More steady kicking from Hodgson took the Men in Black to a 16-0 lead at half-time, before Bath piled on the pressure in the second half. They were left frustrated, however, as Saracens’ defence stood firm. This was the first time in three years that Bath had failed to score a point in a home Premiership fixture, and Hodgson added to the pressure with a steadily increasing tally of points at the other end.

Saracens Director of Rugby Mark McCall was delighted with his team’s performance, saying ‘We were professional and clinical in all parts of the game. Defensively we were good and our discipline was good. It’s a bit irrelevant who’s top of the table at this the halfway point, but we’ve got six games to look forward to at our new home, and to be where we are after several games away from home is a pretty good effort.’
