Ideas to Success (i2s) CSR Campaign
i2s is all about encouraging our employees to innovate and improve the way we operate.
We ran the first i2s-CSR campaign at the end of 2009. It challenged business teams to think about how they could reduce their environmental impact.
Standard i2s campaigns ask for ideas for improvement. But, there are already many known ways to reduce our environmental impact: the key is to do them!
Instead we challenged each team in the business to come up with three environmentally beneficial actions and then to commit to doing them for the duration of the campaign.
In total, 88 teams made pledges to commit to three environmental actions - that adds up to over 250 pledges in total!
The key now is to keep people engaged so that their actions have a long-term benefit, rather than being a short term fix.
Examples of pledges:
At work
- Don't print unnecessarily;
- Double-sided printing;
- Turn off electronic equipment when not in use;
- Use lights sparingly and turn off at the end of the day;
- Re-use and recycle paper;
- Use stairs instead of lift;
- Re-use cups or bring your own mugs;
- Have conferences calls to reduce travel time and expense;
- Use presentations on projectors in meetings, rather than paper handouts;
- Green plants in the office.
Travelling
- Walk or cycle for shorter journeys, e.g. to work; in to town;
- Use public transport;
- Car share;
- Driving more slowly and not accelerating/decelerating hard uses less fuel;
- Switch off engine if stuck in traffic for longer than 3 minutes;
- Ensure tyres are correctly inflated (this improves efficiency by reducing friction - less contact between tyre surface area and road);
- Remove clutter from your vehicle to reduce any additional weight that the car has to carry around.
At home
- turn off electronic equipment when not in use;
- switch off lights when not in use;
- turn the heating down - put a jumper on ;
- recycle paper, card, plastic, glass bottles, aluminium cans (where local facilities / collections exist);
- compost food waste;
- Have a shower instead of a bath.
